This is so true in parenting and in my career, teaching. My nearly 11-year-old was having a meltdown yesterday because he was hungry and we didn't have anything HE wanted to eat in the house. I knew the reason that he was irritable was because he was hungry (he's been that way since he was a baby) so my goal was trying to take care of the need before blowing up at him. Confession, I blew up at him because I knew he was hungry but he was refusing to find something to eat and it just spiraled, but we knew the underlying cause and we try to remember that most of the time. Same thing with teaching teenagers, we have to be better about finding underlying causes to help them be successful when they are suddenly struggling.
